Living Environment: Creating the Best Space for Your Rats

To provide the best living environment for your pet rats, it’s essential to focus on cage setup, bedding options, and enrichment activities. These factors will ensure your rats are healthy, comfortable, and mentally stimulated in their home.

          Cage Setup

Size: Rats need plenty of space to move, climb, and explore. A minimum of 2 cubic feet per rat is recommended, though more space is always better. Popular cages like the Critter Nation provide enough room with multiple levels and easy access for cleaning .

Bar Spacing: For safety, the bars should be spaced no more than 0.5 inches apart to prevent rats, particularly younger ones, from escaping.

Ventilation and Placement: Avoid glass aquariums as they don’t provide adequate ventilation. Wire cages in a quiet area away from direct sunlight and drafts work best.

           Bedding Options (Including Cloth-Covered Trays)

Fleece Liners and Cloth-Covered Trays: Fleece is a popular bedding option because it’s soft, comfortable, and washable. Covering the trays with fleece prevents issues like bumblefoot and offers a smooth, dust-free surface. Layer absorbent materials like pee pads or newsprint underneath the fleece to control moisture and odors.

Traditional Bedding: Paper-based products like Carefresh and Kaytee Clean & Cozy or aspen shavings are highly absorbent and safe for rats. Avoid pine and cedar, as their oils can cause respiratory issues.

Cleaning Routine: Clean fleece liners and bedding regularly to maintain a healthy environment. Spot cleaning daily with full cage cleaning once a week will help minimize odors and reduce the risk of health issues.
